Clayton, NY Homes for Sale and Community Information:

Clayton, New York is a community with about 5,000 residents set along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. It is a popular tourist destination for those headed to recreational activities in the Thousand Islands region. It is the home of the Antique Boat Museum, the largest freshwater nautical museum in North America.

This area of New York northwest of Watertown was settled in the year 1801. The town of Clayton was formed from parts of two other towns, Lyme and Orleans, in 1833. It was named after John M. Clayton, a once-prominent statesman. At the very end of the 19th century, Clayton enjoyed rapid growth as it became the railroad terminus for the Thousand Islands area. Visitors travelled from New York City and other points south to stay in elegant and grand hotels during the railroad age.

Parks and Recreation

Cedar Point State Park is a beautiful facility resting along the shores of the St. Lawrence River on Route 12E. Swimmers and sunbathers will enjoy the beach. A marina with boat launch offers convenience to anglers, boaters and water skiers. Cedar Point also offers quality playground facilities, camping and picnicking.

Canoe Point/Picnic Point State Park is situated out on Grindstone Island. This St. Lawrence River park is still a part of the town of Clayton. Those adventurous enough to make their way to the park by boat will enjoy very scenic nature trails, camping and picnicking. There's also abundant fishing opportunities and even seasonal waterfowl hunting.

Attractions and Activities

Clayton is the home of the Antique Boat Museum, a facility spread out over 4.5-acres along 1,300-ft of shoreline on the St. Lawrence River. Exhibits include a 106-ft houseboat that belonged to a manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel over a century ago. Tours allow museum visitors to experience the gracious river lifestyle of that historic period. Another exhibit covers the history of boat racing. Still another includes examples of the indigenous St. Lawrence Skiff.

In early August of every year, the Antique Boat Museum hosts its annual Boat Show, which is attended by tens of thousands of visitors who partake of speed boat rides and more. The show had been held every year since 1965. Those that purchase Clayton NY real estate have this major event to look forward to every year.
