Black River, NY Homes for Sale and Community Information:

Black River, New York is a community with about 1,400 inhabitants in Jefferson County. It is situated along the 125-mile long Black River. Owners of Black River real estate enjoy a profuse array of outdoor activities, including fishing, water sports, snow skiing, golfing, and mountain trekking. The community also is well-situated for those interested in Fort Drum, Lake Ontario or the St. Lawrence River.

History

The Black River area was first settled in 1806. Soon thereafter, a mill was constructed on the south bank of the river. The community was initially known as Lockport. Eventually, the settlement spread to both sides of the river and to two islands in the river. In 1890, a fire burned a significant portion of the community. Nonetheless, Black River was incorporated the following year, in 1891.

Parks and Recreation

The Black River, depending on the section, offers everything from whitewater rafting to great fishing. The white water rapids are found in the lower river gorge where the water finally pours into Lake Ontario. The upper section in the Adirondacks includes mountain lakes that are great for fishing. The crisp, cool waters are loaded with brook, brown and rainbow trout. There are stretches of the Black River that are also perfect for scenic canoeing and kayaking. An avid angler who purchases Black River NY real estate will never tire of exploring the dramatically different parts of the river.

Attractions and Activities

Experience the latest films the way they were enjoyed a half-century ago at the Black River Drive-In. This bit of classic Americana is found just east of Watertown.

In the winter, skiers and snowboarders can head to Dry Hill in Watertown. This complete facility takes full advantage of the prodigious amounts of very skiable powder snow that blows in off of Lake Ontario each winter. There's also an area especially designed for snow-tubing enthusiasts.

Events

The waters of the lower section of the Black River are so conducive to kayaking that national and even international championships have been held here. The New York State Zoo in Watertown features special events throughout the year, including a "Zoo Year's Eve" experience.

The Black River home buyer will love the wide array of homes for sale in Black River. Whether you like historic 19th century residences or modern, energy efficient Black River homes, you'll find Black River properties well-suited to your desires.

The real estate in Black River includes the occasional waterfront parcel on which one can build a true dream home.
