Alexandria Bay, NY Homes for Sale and Community Information:

Alexandria Bay, New York, is home to about 1,000 individuals in Jefferson County, not far from Watertown. During the tourist season the population frequently swells to more than 15,000. The community is located in the popular Thousand Islands region.

History

The history of European-descended settlement dates to 1817. About two decades later, about two dozen structures comprised the fledgling community. The area has evolved from an economy based on fishing and agriculture to a tourism-based one.

Parks and Recreation

Keewaydin State Park is located southwest of town. It is beautifully situated along the St. Lawrence River, and it offers playground facilities, camping, picnic tables and a public pool. Boaters and fishermen can benefit from the boat launch maintained here. In the winter, ice fishing at Keewaydin State Park is also popular, as is cross-country skiing.

Thompson Park in nearby Watertown is an historic facility designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. It is the home of the 32-acre New York State Zoo and an 18-hole municipal golf course. Sledding and cross-country skiing are popular during the winter months. In the summer, the park is alive with hikers, campers, picnickers and sightseers. Panoramic views of the Watertown area are dynamic.

Attractions and Amenities

A very interesting piece of Alexandria Bay real estate is Boldt Castle, a massive mansion with over a hundred rooms that it located on Heart Island overlooking Alexandria Bay. Boldt invested $2.5 million to replicate a Rhineland castle. His dream was to present it to his wife on Valentine's Day, but she passed on before the day arrived. Boldt ordered all work stopped, and the castle lay unfinished for 73-years. In 1977, millions of dollars were invesdd to restore the castle. Now, ferries bring visitors to this phenomenal property.

Events

Bill Johnston's Pirate Days is a major, ten-day festival held every August. Performers re-enact pirate battles, including a "siege" upon the town. The festival has grown to become one of the major attractions in the Thousand Islands region.

For 50-years, the annual Boat Show in Clayton has enchanted attendees of all ages. Speed boat rides contrast with a luxurious 106-ft long riverboat. The event is staged by the Antique Boat Museum, the largest freshwater maritime facility of its kind on the continent.

The prospective Alexandria Bay home buyer will find about one to two-dozen homes for sale in Alexandria Bay at any given time. Still, the diversity among the Alexandria Bay homes for sale is typically pretty impressive. Some Alexandria Bay homes in town are well-maintained Alexandria Bay properties that are affordably priced. The real estate in Alexandria Bay also includes larger, modern homes with desirable amenities. Alexandria Bay NY real estate also includes a variety of land parcels that can be perfect for building dream homes upon. Some Alexandria Bay NY homes are ranch-style residences on nice, large lots.
