History
A long and eventful history surrounds Alexandria Bay, from the Iroquois Indians who first inhabited the land to today’s residents, the Bay and its area, have always been a locale noted for its beauty and resources. During the American Revolution, James LeRay purchased most of today’s Jefferson County, many of his small towns, rivers and lakes named after members of his immediate family. After the War of 1812, Colonel Elisha Camp was given ownership of the American Island and in turn, sold the islands to Azariah Walton for $3,000. Walton joined Andrew Cornwall and the pair together brought Alexandria Bay to a prominent position that lasts today. After the Civil War, the popularity of the Island only increased with improvements in United State transportation system. Wealthy gentlemen from all over the United States asked about purchasing islands for private use, and the press traveling with General Grant wrote articles in leading city papers, sparking an interest that resulted in a boom of recreation in the Alexandria Bay area. Prohibition created a lucrative business in the Thousand Islands area, with river captains bringing liquor across the border, and dumping it overboard if the law got too close. Today, divers still find bottles at the bottom of the St. Lawrence River and its many inlets, bringing up little pieces of history.
